Sword Art Online II | Anime Review
After a first Season that filled the anime community hearts full of love (Best anime ever!) and then hatred (Loopholes everywhere and everything was horrible), A-1 Pictures decided to give it another shot, that could put Sword Art Online (SAO) as one of the greatest anime ever or as a mediocre one!

Past Season - Sword Art Online

Before watching this anime, I recommend you to watch SAO (first season) first, but if you want, SAO2 is watchable (not fully understandable) without previous knowledge of the past events.

It’s worth talking about the previous season due the controversy that it generated (do not read this if you didn't watch the first season).

I never saw an anime pass from total devotion (and see all anime fans loving it), to total hate (looking for loopholes and failures), like in SAO.
SAO was divided in two parts:

1.   The Sword Art Online World (SAO)
2.   The Alfheim Online World (ALO)

Doing the obvious math, this resulted in two arcs. In the first arc we assist to a lone player Kirito, fighting for his life during two years in an online world where you can’t logout, and if you die in the game you die in real life. In the second arc we assist to a complete "train wreck" of the all mighty Kirito to save his girlfriend Asuna.

Obviously, I did not like the ALO world. The plot was too weak, with a horrible pacing and the new character styling (from sword warriors, to fairies) don’t convinced me. But I don’t started to hate SAO, in first part there are still 12 good episodes (epic ones), where SAO's season should have ended.

Asuna
(Character Styling Fairy Vs Warrioe)

SAO managed to establish a new genre (the "trap in game" genre) and established a high standard, standard that failed to keep in the second part of the season. But it ended with hope that SAO's world would return, in an update to ALO's world with the appearance of Aincrad, the castle of 100 levels where they were trapped in the very first part of the anime!

(the aincrad appearance)

So, naturally, when I saw the picture bellow in my Network(Google +, Facebook), immediately I established high hopes for the second season of SAO and sincerely hoped that they (A1-Pictures) had corrected their mistakes!

(Sword Art Online II - Activated)

Soundtrack - The first impact

Song: IGNITE
Artist: EirAoi

Generally I only think about the art and the song of the opening and generally I don’t like changes in the openings of past anime's seasons, especially if I enjoy them, but they already destroyed this in the second part of the first season!

So I got a little shock when I saw the SAO 2 opening, and my disappointment started to grow:

(Sword Art Online II - Opening song - "IGNITE" by EirAoi)

I saw guns and bullets be fired, where was my Aincrad castle? This was the confirmation that in the second season of SAO they were going build a new world with a new system/ rules!
But lets explore that later. This is the soundtrack section and this opening does its job, giving me a trailer of what SAO II was going to be, with an average song ("IGNITE" by EirAoi)  and decent animation at least they improve the opening (comparing with SAO I - second part)!
Analysis
(Last Spoiler Warning)
I put my expectations in this anime very high, because I really wanted they had managed to make everyone forget the crappy 2nd arc of the SAO I, by producing a great anime for us!
So the first couple of episodes were a series of expectations and disappointment!
Sword Art Online II starts presenting to us the world of Gun Gale Online (GGO), and I thought this anime would be with new characters, only with some spontaneous appearances of Kirito’s gang!
But then I realize that I was completely wrong, when I saw that Kirito would be the main star once again! Then I thought: "well, it’s Kirito's first time in GGO, at least we will see a character evolution from the scratch".
And once again I was wrong! In two or three minutes Kirito exceeds all the veterans of the game and, to make a bigger humiliation, he choose the least fit weapon to this game (Let's bring a sword to a gun match). I need to be a little more correct were, his weapon of choice is a lightsaber :P

(Sword Art Online II –Kirito Weapon)

So, after this start, did SAO 2 something right?
This answer will depend of your personal taste. SAO 2 didn’t bring anything innovative this time, but it uses some cards that fulfill my tastes in an anime.

The more important it's the GGO event, the Bullet of Bullets (BoB), that it’s a tournament all against all, and without exception in every anime, movie, book, etc. that I watched that had tournaments, I enjoyed.

They make an excellent work with Sinon “the sniper”, I think it’s a very interesting female character from the design to the back story!
(Sword Art Online II –Sinon)

And to end and to give some kind of compliment to character of Kirito , I enjoyed Kirito's avatar, for not being a reflection of himself (although it was not intentional).Because in a personal note I hate what the web is becoming where is an extension of us instead of be what we want to be!

The plot (it’s an important part of any anime or other storyteller media) it was interesting, but SAO 2 - GGO arc didn’t focused in the game aspect. We don’t see the GGO world be explored, we don’t know his mechanics, we don’t know anything, with exception of there are a tournament where Kirito (the 5 seconds GGO's expert), will try to capture a character called by the name of “Death Gun”. Because every time that we fired his gun, a player disconnects and dies in the real world, and the “cyber police” had to send the expert Kirito to investigate!

(Sword Art Online II –Gun Gale Online)

In general I liked this arc, Shion's story, her interaction with Kirito and the fight against “Death Gun”, unfortunately with the plot being unveiled, it transformed the game anime in a detective story!

If you noticed, I started to talk in GGO arc, my biggest fear comes true and in the half season, like in SAO season 1, the recipe would be the same: that season it also receive another part and, like in season I, the pacing of this transition was awful.

So what did they done?

First they return to the awful world of ALO, and once again (like with Asuna) they transformed a good female character (Shinon) in one more girl in love with Kirito, with a bow and animal ears (simply awful, it’s like to see Vegeta been transformed in Krillin [Dragon Ball]).

The second part of this anime was split in two interconnected arcs:

1.   The ALO Game Quest
2.   Sleeping Knights (or mother Rosario I prefer the first name)

In the Quest's arc, like I said before, it was Shinon's integration in the SAO group, transforming/ destroying completely the character, losing all the glory/ interest during the arc!

(Sinon from cool to nothing)

They also were humiliated by Log Horizon (an anime that had to work hard to lose the connotation of "SAO's copy"). In Log Horizon they show the mechanics of the game and they explained everything that is needed to a viewer understand the plot. The quest of SAO 2 it’s a total chaos, they don’t explain anything, you’re going to stay lost the entire quest, trying to understand concepts that weren’t explained!

There are not much to talk about in this arc, in an OVA it could be interesting but, in this case, it was totally out of context only to make the transition from the Gun Gale Online to the Alfheim Online World.

And after an awful transition it starts an interesting arc in SAO: the Sleeping Knights Arc! (After the disappointing train wrecking that was the first arc). And why it is interesting??
Because Kirito finally stepped out and we are able to see shades of the original Asuna in a ALO/Real World context and a new interesting player appeared in the game.
o the awful world of ALO, and once again (like with Asuna) they transformed a good female character (Shinon) in one more girl in love with Kirito, with a bow and animal ears (simply awful, it’s like to see Vegeta been transformed in Krillin [Dragon Ball]).

(Engrave the Names – Floor 27)

This arc explained some of the difficulties that SAO survivors are passing, after all they suffer a 2 year gap. It also introduce Konno Yuuki, the leader of a guild constituted by a group of players that are suffering from a terminal disease and are playing the game to experiment innovative technologies/treatments.

The guild's objective is only one: engrave their names in ALO, to symbolize their existence by beat a boss (Aincrad World yeee). To help in that quest they chose Asuna, after some trials to do this achievement.

This arc is simply the better and sadder arc of SAO 2, remembering all of us if you die in reality, you will die in the game :P!

Final Thoughts

Sword Art Online II in an overall note, in terms of expectations was a disappointment; I was expecting other angles of the story, mostly of the questions left open of the first season stayed unanswered. If SAO (2010) didn’t exist I probably had given a bigger score, for me SAO failed to put their product as one of the best anime series of all time!
The ending of the second season gives space to a third season, and finally they say the name of SAO's creator (Akihiko Kayaba). There is still hope, but now with less expectations.
(Sword Art OnlineCretor - Akihiko Kayaba)

The objective/ motivation of SAO's game creator are still unclear and need to be answered, his reference in the last episode of this season gives room to this questions be explored

Future Seasons !?
Like I said before, the end of second season was weak and leave the feeling of a third season. Checking the manga there are still stories being written, so one day in the future SAO 3 will be activated!

Loose notes – Past Seasons

Obviously this is a fifth season, so you need watch the past seasons. Nevertheless you can watch this season without previous knowledge, but you will not understand a big percentage of the plot!

To fully enjoy Hanamonogatari, first see the past seasons in his release order:

  • ·        Bakemonogatari
  • ·        Nisemonogatari
  • ·        Nekomonogatari (Kuro)
  • ·        Monogatari season 2

(Order of Monogatari)

The Soundtrack

Song: The last day of my adolescence
Artist: Miyuki Sawashiro

(Hanamonogatari–opening)

A typical opening for the Monogatari Series, in line with the previous season, there are not much to say about it. The opening come to confirm that Hanamonogatari is an extension of the Monogatari Second Season.

Just a final word for the
ending song: it is a little to strange for me, but by rule I generally don’t like ending sequence (with very, very rare exceptions), but this one was too out of context, even for studio Shaft!
Analysis
For me this series is more worthy because it creates interest for upcoming stories and the new loose ends than due to the story, which only have five episodes.

Let’s start the review, continuing the logic of Monogatari Second Season this was the time to Suruga Kanbaru (and it was predictable because of Kaichi’s strange interest by her). It wasn’t a great performance but was much better than the Tsubasa Hanekawa performance in Tsubasa Tiger.

Araragi appears in the episodes but instead of the feeling that he can show up at any minute to save the day, this time it was more natural (it only serve to increase the interest by Araragi and his new life, now that he and Senjōgahara finished School). He appears only to give advices and complement some funny dialogs with Suruga Kanbaru and not to save/fix all in the last minute!

Concentrating in the Hanamonogatari plot, this season it felt like a continuation of Monogatari Second Season that it doesn't aired, because it had to be chronologically after of Hitagi End story, which is a better story than Hanamonogatari, due of the great performance of Kaiki and Senjōgahara!

The plot revolve about Kanbaru's cursed monkey's paw, focusing more in their past (before she got the paw), from their childhood to her basketball achievements!
A fierce battle (with some twists) between Kanbaru versus her old basketball's rival Rouka Numachi (despite they never played an official basketball match).

The rivalry (Kanbaru on top, Numachiin bottom)

We can take small conclusions from this season: studio Shaft maintained his bet on giving the main spot to other characters and keep his high quality animation, but with a little decrease of the story.

The rivalry between Kanbaru and Numachi ended in a high quality basketball match. An one to one epic match where the animation compensates for the slight weaker story, makes it worth this season. It’s just Studio Shaft at their best!

Example of the superior animation

The most interesting part of this season is the plot possibilities that opened!
I already talked about Araragi's new life and the interest of seeing that, but for a few characters increased the interest to know their past story and their future:

Kaiki

It was a strange Hitagi that show up, the time that passed between the end of Monogatari Second Season is unknown. The doubt about if he survived the shoot is still in the air, I bet he is alive but you never knows (this season could serve as proof but we don't know when Kaiki was shot!).

But the interest is not only about Hitagi future/present, now there are also some interest in his past relation with Kanbaru’s mother and the rest of the gang (Oshino and Gaen)!

Meme Oshino and Izuko Gaen

Oshino keeps disappeared since season one, many times referenced, but still disappeared. Some info about his past and about his present situation, would be interesting!

Kaiki at left, Oshino at top center, Izuko Gaenbottom center, Yozuru Kagenui at right

We can’t talk about Oshino’s past without getting some appetite to know about Izuko Gaen, about her sister (Kanbaru’s mother) and also about Gaen’s assistant, Kagenui!

Oshino, Ougi

This character appear to represent trouble. We still don’t know what their intentions are: if is simply to generate chaos, be an observer, solve problems with oddities or simply to follow orders!?

This character is so sinister that we even don’t know his genre! Girl in Monogatari Second season, male in this season!

Ougi Oshino What are you?

The only information that we had about him, is that he/she played with Suruga Kanbaru in childhood and he/she claims to be Oshino’s niece!

Final Thoughts

In only 5 episodes Shaft managed (for me at least) to increase the interest for new stories, until Hanamonogatari my focus was in the night that Shinobu transformed Araragi in a vampire!

Now I care about other character’s stories: the future of Kaiki and Araragi; the new life of Araragi/ Senjōgahara; who shot (and why) Kaiki and what is he going to do about it; and Gaen's story starts to get the need for explanations.

Araragi with a car instead of his bicycle!

All this new questions in only 5 episodes, despite the simple story (with a great animation), studio Shaft gave room to a new pack of stories to future seasons!

Future Seasons !?

As I already written my interest for stories just increased with this 5 episodes season. I want to know more from Gaen and Oshino and I still want to know what happened in the night that Araragi was bitten by Shinobu!

The Kizumonogatari film is announced!

Log Horizon Review | Anime Review

Log Horizon brings innovation and a new vision to the anime community, with their vision and new angles of the in game anime genre!

Loose notes – An Extra Battle

When this anime appeared in the anime’s lists for 2014, the comparisons to Sword Art Online (SAO) and accusations of plagiarism started!

The copy accusation for me is a little pathetic, in the movie/game industry is a common practice (Hunger Games/Battle Royale), same stories with a little twist (different visions and perspectives)!

The comparison to SAO is impossible not to do. SAO marked the community in the gaming category. The vast majority of the community liked the first part of SAO and hated the second one and, I don’t understand why, the hate of second part affected the general content of SAO especially the first part! But that are SAO subjects and when I do the review of Sword Art Online 2 I will write about this subject!

Sword Art Online Vs Log Horizon
To enter in a more detail about anime in the gaming world and to defend a little Log Horizon, SAO wasn't the first anime who present it, neither Log Horizon will be the last!

The first anime I saw in a gaming world was Hunter x Hunter OVA – Greed Island, where Gon and Killua are trapped voluntarily in a game where they can die (if you die in the game you die in reality) and they have to evolve mental and physically to survive and beat the game!

To conclude Log Horizon is not SAO, SAO is not HxH and HxH is not Log Horizon, they are only great anime with great stories and mistakes (SAO season 1 - part 2 :P) they show us different perspectives. If they merge their plots in a single anime, I probably will give a classification close to 100% for this anime.

The Soundtrack

After seeing the opening of this anime I stayed a little surprise with myself because I didn’t like it. In a technical point of view the animation was the correct, resulting in a trailer who didn’t spoiled any aspect of the story, and the song has a good refrain (Database, one of the components with whom I work in my job and an excuse for some companies to disguise their incompetence like Galp Portugal! 2 month to do a Gas contact).

Log Horizon–opening

But, most probably, the reason I don't like the music is because the genre is hip hop. This is a genre that I really don’t appreciate!

Another reason why I don’t like the opening theme is because they have a much better option, in my point of view, of course. At certain point there is a ball where the orchestra plays the true opening theme of "Elder Tale" game (the game where they are trapped). I think if they incorporated this theme in the opening would have been a better choice!

 Analysis

When they presented to us the world of “Elder Tale” I stayed frightened because of two points:

1.   The main characters are players with a very high level (monsters) defeating everything that moves with relative ease
2.   Theyare basically three lone wolves in the game.

This beginning it looks like a total copy of Sword Art Online, but (fortunately) it was only the way they choose to present a little of the world and their mechanics!

Log Horizon – the powerful three Shiroe, Akatsuki and Naotsugu

Also in the beginning the focus of Log Horizon is in the players who taken a strange path (in my opinion). If I was trapped in a game at least in the beginning and depending of the rules (if I die in the game, will I die in reality?) I would explore the game and try to do quests. But, in Log Horizon the focus goes to a tedious climate lived by the players, or by the bigger players (Level 90), who start a massive and nonsense PK (Player Killing)!

Log Horizon has one of the best plot twist that I saw in anime. They establish a rule that each player only can obtain a maximum level of 90. That rule worked in favor of the anime, because at certain time in the game the players with the maximum level to fight and win a similar player need to use the right strategy and think in all variables involved in a battle versus a player!

Shiroe also takes a different path and founded the Guild Log Horizon (yes, the anime name was explained: P), and then Log Horizon definitely changed! The characters started to be interesting, from the level 90 to low level characters that they used to show us the game engine (the level up and the characteristics of each race/class).

Log Horizon – Log Horizon Guild from Level 90 at left to level 20 at right
Another innovation that I saw relatively to this genre of anime was the interactions with NPC (Non Player Character) or "People of the Land", as they are call in the game. The players are called "adventurous".

NPC have feelings too, this is the notion that I received from this anime. Instead of the old boring NPC that only talks to you to give you missions or if you speak the right thing. The People of the Land may suffer or die.

From People of the Land two characters stood out: Rundelhaus Code, the NPC that wants to be an adventurer; and Lenessia Erhart Cowen, the lazy princess.
Their dialogs/interaction with Crusty (adventurer guild leader) create an enjoyable clime in the anime.

Log Horizon – Lenessia “A Lazy and Cowardly princess” Cowen
The vast majority of the interaction of the characters reveals a high level of companionship. They also have a series of gags (between several characters instead of the usual one), which gives a moment of humor when the anime needs it!J

To end the analysis with a little of criticism there are some angles that have not been explored, probably due to a limit of 25 episodes or due to the second season having already received the green light at the time.

One of the angles to explore is the increasing of maximum level of the characters in 10 levels, despite being addressed (spoken) at the beginning of the anime, I have not seen anyone get the level 91 or even try to get it!

Performing quests should be one of the main focus, this topic is spoken many times along the anime, but I don’t remember about any reward or even a quest performed by anyone, even the main quest "The return of the Goblin King" (that takes more than 10 episodes) wasn't completed!

Another weak point is the division between class levels. The characters of level 90 are the adults and the low level are considered the kids, this classification is not by the levels, is by the true age of players that was represented in the game by their heights. For me, in a game a player produces an avatar, we can be a girl/ boy, short/ tall, we can be what we want. And generally a kid creates strongest characters than an adult because it has more time to play the game!

And to end, but probably this topic will be addressed in the season 2,  the Debauchery Tea Party founder (Kanami) is a constant presence. Ever that Shiroe demonstrates doubt or nostalgia she appear, but their relationship it’s never explained, where is Kanami and if she even is in the game? Are questions to be answered.

Log Horizon – Kanami leader of Debauchery Tea Party

Beyond the fate of Kanami, I still don’t know if “Elder Tale” only occur in a Japanese Map or if there are other countries represented, I have this doubt because in the anime they only show the Japan map, but they say that the world is based in Half GAIA Project which is a half-scale model of planet Earth. So I launch the question:

There are other countries/continents?

And obviously the first season not had a proper final they only announced a second season with a, “Oh wait there’s more” was pretty bad!

Final Thoughts
I really enjoyed this anime, Log Horizon presented us a more political perspective (more my style) and it doesn’t care about the whys and how’s they are stuck in the game!

These explanations probably will appear in the future, but they are only needed in a third or fourth season in my opinion. Doing quests and characters leveling up are pretty more important (there are still the leveling up from 90 to 100 to show, besides the interesting lower level characters)!

Speculating a little about Log Horizon, there are no futurist technology to play the game, they use the same technology that we current use (PC and third generation consoles), I think their bodies were transported to the "Elder Tale" world a little as HxHGred Island OVA and probably if the game ends (a final secret quest) they can escape from the game, but how do you end a game that never ends?

Log Horizon's future seasons has so many paths that they can follow, that almost certainly will guarantee a new success of Satelight studio.
I will watch with pleasure to more adventures of the villain with glasses.

Log Horizon – Shiroe The Villain with Glasses
Future Seasons !?
This is an easy prediction, there are too many questions to be answered and in the anime the last image is the announcement of the second season air in the fall of 2014!

I can only hope they maintain the quality and the focus of season with a little more exploration of "Elder Tale" and perform game quests!

Sincerely I think Log Horizon to be a little better requires a bigger number of episodes (at least more than 25 episodes that can be transmitted instead the crappy fillers of Naruto).
